Ženski polni organ, ženska spolna žlezda, paran organ, oblika i veličine badema. Smešten je u jamici na spoljašnjem zidu karlične duplje. Ima dvostruku ulogu: stvara ženske spolne ćelije (jaja), deluje kao žlezda sa unutrašnjim lučenjem. Počev od 12. do 45. godine života u jajniku sazrevaju jaja. Proces sazrevanja jajeta i njegovo izbavicanje iz jajnika naziva se ovulacija i događa se cikllično u sredini između dve menstruacije. Hormoni jajnika deluju na sluznicu materice i na održanje ploda u njoj tokom trudnoće. Bez oba jajnika žena je neplodna.
