(1814-1881) British lawyer and colonial administrator, born in Ireland. He was governor of South Australia 1855–62 during which time he oversaw the development of roads and railroads, and greatly encouraged the agricultural and pastoral industries, correctly predicting a good future for wine growing in the colony.
