(1798-1874) French historian, author of a 17-volume Histoire de France/History of France 1833–67, in which he immersed himself in the narrative and stressed the development of France as a nation. He also produced a number of books on nature, including L’Oiseau/The Bird 1856 and La Montagne/The Mountain 1868.
