Trade name for a series of alloys containing mainly nickel and chromium, with small amounts of other substances such as iron, magnesium, silicon, and carbon. Nichrome has a high melting point and is resistant to corrosion. It is therefore used in electrical heating elements and as a substitute for platinum in the flame test.
