The Greek biographer who wrote Parallel Lives (a collection of biographies of famous Greeks and Romans that Shakespeare used in writing his plays); (46?-120 AD).
(c. AD 46-120) Greek biographer and essayist. His Parallel Lives comprise paired biographies of famous Greek and Roman soldiers and politicians, followed by comparisons between the two. Thomas North’s 1579 translation inspired Shakespeare’s Roman plays.
Plutarch lectured on philosophy in Rome and was appointed procurator of Greece by Emperor Hadrian.
