multiplier effect
/ ˈmʌltɪplaɪər ɪˈfekt /

Process whereby one change sets in motion a sequence of events that results in decline or growth. For example, in S Wales, pit closures in the coal industry resulted in unemployment, depopulation, closure of services, and disinvestment. This in turn led to further unemployment. Multiplier effects are also important in new towns, where industry is needed to attract people and create further wealth.
