Capital of the Netherlands; Canals cut through the city link it with the North Sea and the Rhine, and as a Dutch port it is second only to Rotterdam. There is shipbuilding, printing, food processing, banking, and insurance.
Art galleries include the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk, Van Gogh Museum, and the Rembrandt house. Notable also are the Royal Palace 1655 and the Anne Frank house.
The city developed out of a fishing village at the mouth of the Amstel; became part of Holland 1317; passed to the duke of Burgundy 1428. It was freed from Spanish domination 1579. After the golden age of the 17th century it declined in maritime importance. It was occupied by the Germans during World War II.
