City and market town in West Sussex; 111 km/69 mi SW of London, near Chichester Harbour; est) 25,000. It is the administrative headquarters of West Sussex. It was a Roman township (Noviomagus Regnensium), and the remains of the Roman palace built around AD 80 at nearby Fishbourne are unique outside Italy. There is a cathedral consecrated 1108, later much rebuilt and restored, and the Chichester Festival Theatre (1962). It lies in an agricultural area.
