Adopted name of Margarita Carmen Cansino (1918-1987)
US dancer and film actress. She gave vivacious performances in 1940s musicals and played erotic roles in Gilda 1946 and Affair in Trinidad 1952. She was known as Hollywood’s “goddess” during the height of her career. She was married to Orson Welles 1943–48 and appeared in his film The Lady from Shanghai 1948. She gave assured performances in Pal Joey 1957 and Separate Tables 1958.
Her later appearances were intermittent and she retired in 1972, a victim of Alzheimer's disease.
