Short for IBM Personal Computer. A class of personal computers introduced in 1981 and conforming to IBM’s PC specification. The first PC was based on the Intel 8088 processor. For a number of years, the IBM PC was the de facto standard in the computing industry for PCs, and clones, or PCs that conformed to the IBM specification, have been called PC-compatible.
