Enlarged thyroid gland resulting from iodine deficiency; SYN. goitre, struma.
Enlargement of the thyroid gland seen as a swelling on the neck. It is most pronounced in simple goiter, which is caused by iodine deficiency. Much more common is toxic goiter or thyrotoxicosis, caused by overactivity of the thyroid gland.
