Or mandrake; Plant of the Old World genus Mandragora of almost stemless plants with narcotic properties, of the nightshade family Solanaceae. They have large leaves, pale blue or violet flowers, and globose berries known as devil’s apples.
The humanoid shape of the root of M. officinarum gave rise to the superstition that it shrieks when pulled from the ground.
