System whereby a woman is expected to have more than one husband at the same time. It is found in Tibet and certain parts of India, where polyandry takes the form of the marriage of one woman to several brothers, as a means of keeping intact a family's heritage and property. Although it is found in other areas, in practice, it is neither expected nor normative behavior (see norm).
