Pen name of Thomas Alexander Browne (1826-1915)
Australian writer. Born in London, he was taken to Australia as a child 1830. He became a pioneer squatter, and a police magistrate in the goldfields. He wrote 17 novels, mostly rather stilted and “literary” romances, but is remembered mainly for Robbery Under Arms 1888 and A Squatter’s Life 1890, which give graphic accounts of life in the outback.
Robbery Under Arms, the cautionary tale of a bushranger’s experiences narrated in the vernacular as he awaits execution, has frequently been adapted for stage and screen and its Byronic gang leader Captain Starlight gave his name to a musical 1964.
