Helsinki was founded 1550 by King Gustavus Vasa of Sweden, N of its present location. It was ceded to Russia 1809 and regained independence 1917. The city contains the parliament house, an 18th-century cathedral, and two universities. It is rich in fin-de-sičcle buildings (many by the German-born architect Carl Ludwig Engel), rivaling even Barcelona and Vienna. The pale color of the local building material has given it the name of the “white city of Europe”. The port is kept open by ice-breakers in winter.
