Area of England corresponding roughly to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia. The E Midlands comprises Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, and Nottinghamshire. The W Midlands covers the metropolitan county of West Midlands created from parts of Staffordshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire; and (often included) the S Midlands comprising Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire.
In World War II, the E Midlands was worked for oil, and substantial finds were made in the 1980s; the oilbearing E Midlands Shelf extends into Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
