A region in central Italy; Also called: Toscana.
(Italian Toscana) Region of N central Italy, on the west coast; area 23,000 sq km/8,878 sq mi; est) 3,528,700. Its capital is Florence, and cities include Pisa, Livorno, and Siena. The area is mainly agricultural, with many vineyards, such as in the Chianti hills; it also has lignite and iron mines and marble quarries (Carrara marble is from here). The Tuscan dialect has been adopted as the standard form of Italian. Tuscany was formerly the Roman Etruria, and inhabited by Etruscans around 500 BC. In medieval times the area was divided into small states, united under Florentine rule during the 15th–16th centuries. It became part of united Italy 1861.
