Compensation for a wrong | SYN: expiation, satisfaction. In Christian theology, the doctrine that Jesus suffered on the cross to bring about reconciliation and forgiveness between God and humanity. Atonement is an action that enables a person separated from God by sin to be reconciled (“at one”) with him. In ancient Judaism this was achieved through the sacrificial killing of animals.
